Our Story

Essex and Hertfordshire Heathens is a kindred founded in 2015 in Abridge, Essex by Hamish Cronin. The idea being to create a small local group of like minded heathens to come together to build bonds of friendship and spirituality. The first incarnation of the kindred was simple The Essex Heathen Kindred. The first moot was in the same year at the local pub; The Malsters Arms. Soon after that first meeting a monthly moot timetable followed, with people from both Hertfordshire and even from London attending. The kindred then naturally transformed into the Essex and Hertfordshire Heathen Kindred or E&H for short.

We as a kindred have evolved over the years to a state now where we consider each other family. As of this writing in 2024 some of us have been together for almost 10 years. New members join continuously and we are ever growing. We have an elected Jarl, Bannerman, Gothi and Gythia.

Our greatest strength is our children, we are the kindred with the youngest and most children. Some years ago one member could boast having half of the children in our kindred as being his own, with our growth the number of children from ages 0 - 18 is unmatched in UK Heathenry. Children are the future, whilst they aren't made to join in with our rituals and sumbels, they are all growing up with each other and play together.

Over the years we have adjusted and changed our moot pattern, the majority of the time and at the present time, we have monthly moots where we travel to different towns and historical locations within our counties.

We have two sacred locations: The Witches Circle and The Harlow Temple. The former is a circle of trees etched in magic and power on a common near the town of Tring in Harlow. Our Gothi often used it prior to the kindred being formed. The latter is a neolithic burial site in Harlow, it was used by Saxons and had a Roman temple there. Once again it is used as an open air temple by us.

Traditionally we celebrate Yule and Winternights every year along with smaller festivals. Winternights is held at the Harlow Temple where we have an ancestors ritual. Yule is held at the Witches Circle where we burn a sunwheel and hold a blot before retiring to a hall for food and merriment.
